With a history stretching back to producing steam engines in the 1830s, German manufacturer Hanomag entered the light car market in 1924 with the 2/10 PS, produced at their Hanover plant. The innovative integration of the fenders into the bodywork gifted vastly more passenger space than was possible at the time with separate fenders and running boards, but its striking resemblance to the flat loaves of bread served in the German army earned it the nickname Kommissbrot, or 'army bread'. The mid-mounted single-cylinder 500cc motor employed a chain-drive without a differential, giving the 2/10 PS the unlikely distinction of being the world's first mid-engined series production car. Sales were strong, but the arrival of the four-seat and more competitively priced Austin Seven quickly saw market share decline, and production ceased in 1928.
This Hanomag Henschel 2/10 PS Lim. F20 "Kommissbrot" is presented with old plates (BN 27-3947) and documentation about the model, though no paperwork specific to this car is included. The vehicle will require attention and recommissioning before being ready for road use.
