With the curvaceous 'Ponton' saloon having financially secured the post-war future of Mercedes-Benz, attention turned to bringing the three-pointed star firmly into the modernist era. The 1959 launch of the W111 drew cautious inspiration from the booming United States, with the legendary Paul Bracq employing restrained use of tailfins to create one of the most elegant cars of its generation. Mechanically similar to its predecessor and retaining the M127 2195cc inline-six, the W111 boasted Technical Director Fritz Nallinger's latest safety innovations – crumple zones, retractable seatbelts, and the first use of front disc brakes on a Mercedes-Benz. 1960 saw the debut of an elegant pillarless coupé, with the cabriolet turning heads a few months later at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The cabriolet would be the rarest W111 by far, with just 2,729 built before the range was replaced in 1965. Top-down and four-up in the sunshine, today there are surely few better ways of enjoying classic motoring.
This Mercedes-Benz 220 SE was delivered new in Germany, finished in elegant silver over black leather with a black fabric roof, fitted with a manual gearbox and an injection carburetion system.
It comes with a significant file of invoices and notes, detailing its 2003 engine overhaul at Weidemann & Dresemann in Münster and the restoration of the woodwork by Tescari in Cologne in 2002. The original Fahrzeugschein provides a record of its previous owners, with the current owner acquiring the car in 2004. Among other documents, the file includes a 2009 service invoice from Mercedes-Benz and a 2006 technical inspection report. It also comes with its German registration documents (Teil I and II).
The car has been maintained in the owner's professional garage. Despite this regular upkeep, it has been kept on static display in recent years. As a result, recommissioning will be required before it returns to the road.
