Compared with the superseded W116, the W126 was aerodynamically more efficient, a factor that enabled the range to meet the requirements of Mercedes-Benz's 'Energy Program', instigated to improve fuel efficiency. Many commented on the distinctly Italian flavour of the new styling which, combined with Mercedes-Benz's traditional exemplary build quality, made this new S-Class so appealing.
As with the superseded W116 range, 'S-Class' was an abbreviation for Sonderklasse (Special Class). Launched at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1985, the 560 SEC coupé was an addition to the W126 line-up and the most powerful of the three luxury coupés then on offer. This new model retained the existing bodyshell virtually unchanged but was powered by the new 5,547cc version of the M117 all-alloy V8 engine producing 300bhp (DIN). The 5½-litre engine was also used for Mercedes-Benz's luxury flagship, the 560 SEL saloon, though customers resident in the USA had to make do with considerably less powerful versions of both models.
The running gear followed Mercedes-Benz's established blueprint, with all-independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. However, a four-speed automatic was now the only transmission option available. Despite weighing almost 1¾ tonnes, the 560 SEC raced to 100km/h (62mph) in only 7.2 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 156mph, these figures being a considerable improvement over those of the far-from-slow 500 SEC.
As befitted one of Mercedes-Benz's flagships, the 560 SEC came in standard form with a host of desirable features, and customers could further choose from an extensive list of options. Despite its lofty price, the 560 SEC would turn out to be the most popular of the C126 coupés. These cars were destined from the outset to be future classics – and deservedly so.

Built in late 1988, this 560 SEC was originally fitted with numerous equipment, including the heated seats, electric sunroof, orthopaedic leather seats, additional heater, cruise control and was painted in Blauschwartz Mettalic assorted with a Grey leather interior.
Purchased new by Mr. Jürg Höppnet, the 560 was finally acquired new by Mr. Adolf Artho in January 1989. All along its life, this car has been regularly maintained and the service-book was duly completed and stamped years after years. Acquired in 2022 by a German collector, this car was showing 136.186 kilometres when it was serviced by Autohaus Hechingen.
this Blauschwarz Metallic car remained in Switzerland until purchased by the current vendor and imported to Germany (with all European taxes paid) in 2022. In 2023, the car received a complete dry ice cleaning of its undercarriage as well as a complete detailing with ceramic coating.
Bought in January 2024 by its current owner, the 560 has been sparingly used to travel between Paris and Normandy for family trips and is now showing slightly more than 146.000 kilometres on the odometer.
Today, the car is sitting on 17" AMG Aero III wheels and is fitted with the period correct Becker Mexico radio.
Registered in France, this Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC will be sold with an important history file, including its original booklet (service-book, owner's manual, alarm's manual); Becker documentation; Swiss emission logbook; toolkit (uncomplete); first aid kit; spare wheel; warning triangle and the old Motorola phone equipment which was originally mounted on the centre-console.
