THE CAR OFFERED
In the late 1960s, Ford chairman Bunkie Knudsen had taken Shelby Mustang production in-house, much to the chagrin of Carroll Shelby, who felt the cars that bore his name had grown too soft for his liking. But with a couple of years left on his contract, Shelby had little to say, and carried on developing the Mustang to its maximum potential, with a series of cars that had the power, presence and poise that Shelby customers demanded.
The big-block GT500 finally brought the Shelby Mustang on par with the Camaro and Mopar E-Body Challenger/'Cuda twins, while offering a bit more luxury and cachet from the Shelby nameplate. Available as a fastback or convertible, it represented the ultimate performance Mustang, and despite Shelby's distaste for its luxurious equipment, it was still a formidable performance car renowned for outstanding handling and straight-line speed.
From the Golden State Muscle Car Collection comes this rare 1969 GT500 Fastback, finished in its original color scheme of Acapulco Blue with white side stripes. Shelby documentation on file shows the car was delivered new to Eger Motors of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, and the contains the original build sheets, and a Shelby owner's manual.
The accompanying Marti Report shows this car was built in Dearborn and equipped with a 428-4V Cobra Jet Ram Air engine, four-speed close-ratio transmission, and 3.50:1 Traction-Lok rear axle. High-back bucket seats trimmed in black vinyl with 'knit' inserts feature inside, as do a center console and sports-deck rear seat. Other options include power front disc brakes, power steering, deluxe seat belts, Visibility Group, and an AM radio.
The bold scheme brilliantly complements the aggressive styling, with its wide-open full-width grille, low-mount foglamps, triple hood scoops, fender and quarter scoops, and aggressively kicked-up rear spoiler. Wide taillights and center-exit exhaust complete the racy look. This car also rides on factory correct Shelby wheels shod with white-letter Goodyear rubber. Above its factory equipment, this car has been fitted with air conditioning and a professionally installed high-power audio system.
Beautifully finished and detailed yet well-suited for regular enjoyment, this gorgeous fastback GT500 is one of just 1,536 built in 1969, and is a highly collectible model from the penultimate year of the original Ford/Shelby partnership.
