THE CAR OFFERED
Another 'certified sleeper' from the Golden State Muscle Car Collection is this marvelous 1966 Dodge Coronet 440 Hardtop. At first glance, this understated, all-black Coronet looks as though it could have come from your grandmother's garage – sitting on steel wheels with dog-dish hubcaps, no trim rings, and skinny bias-ply tires, and with a simple bench-seat interior. Only a discreet badge on the front fender hints at what's going on under the plain black wrapper.
Lifting the hood reveals the mighty 426 Hemi shoehorned between the fender wells, which is backed by a heavy-duty Torqueflite automatic transmission. According to accompanying documentation – including the IBM punch card assembly tag and Chrysler Corp. production records – this Coronet 440 (denoting the trim line in this case) is a genuine Hemi-powered car and is currently presented in its factory-correct colors and specifications. It is believed to be one of just 339 Coronets equipped with the 426 Hemi.
Prior to joining the Golden State Muscle Car Collection, this incredible Dodge was owned by the renowned specialists, S&S Mopar Muscle of Southern California. It had been discovered by them in rough, but relatively rust-free condition. It had been used as a weekend drag car for many years, but miraculously escaped being heavily modified, 'tubbed', or otherwise cut up. It was treated to a comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration by S&S, with all details finished to its original fender tag and build records. Remarkably, the car still had its Certicard warranty tag.
Still looking fresh and crisp since its restoration, the Hemi Coronet 440 is undoubtedly one of the highlights of this amazing collection of American muscle. It is a fantastic example of the 'sleeper' drag car – understated and unadorned, while packing one of biggest, baddest, V8 engines of all time.
