Footnotes

The first of countless upgrades to Porsche's perennial 911 came in 1966 with the introduction of the 911S. Easily distinguishable by its stylish Fuchs five-spoked alloy wheels, the 'S' featured a heavily revised engine producing 160bhp. A lengthened wheelbase introduced in 1969 improved the 911's handling, and then in 1970 the engine underwent the first of many enlargements: to 2.2 litres. In 1974 all 911 variants received the 2.7-litre unit, hitherto reserved for the Carrera RS, when the latter went to 3.0 litres.

Delivered new to Switzerland in the desirable colour combination of orange with black interior, this beautifully presented 2.7-litre 911S has been professionally upgraded in 2012 with a carburettor-fed engine producing a healthy 210 PS. As a result, this is truly a wolf in sheep's clothing, with better torque at low revs reported thanks to a broader camshaft profile than an original RS. Importantly, the original fuel-injected 2.7-litre 911S engine, which needs rebuilding, is included in the sale, and it is worthwhile noting that this car does not have a sunroof and thus is structurally stronger than those that do.

Enormous fun to drive, this is one of the most tastefully executed Porsche 911 upgrades we have seen and deserves close inspection. The car is offered with German registration documents.
