THE PORSCHE 911S TARGA

The first of countless upgrades to Porsche's perennial 911 came in 1966 with the high-performance 911S, propelled by a heavily revised engine producing a heady 160bhp, tuned suspension, powerful dual-circuit brakes, and more luxury options. Concurrently with the 911S, Porsche added an open-topped variant to the 911 model range for 1967 distinguished by its unique stainless steel-clad roll bar, removable roof panel and a detachable plastic rear window. Commemorating Porsche's successive wins at the famous Sicilian road race, it was named "Targa." The Soft Window Targa represented Porsche's innovative response to growing safety concerns surrounding open-top motoring, while still preserving much of the driving experience associated with a traditional cabriolet. Produced for only a brief period before the adoption of the fixed glass rear window (available the following year as an option), the Soft Window Targa remains today among the rarest and most sought-after variants of the early 911 range, admired for its elegant stainless-steel roll hoop, removable roof panel, and unique folding rear window design.

The versatile new 911 Targa was as close as Porsche came to 'wind in the hair' 911 motoring until the full Cabriolet arrived in the early 1980s.

THE CAR OFFERED

Completed on October 16, 1967, this highly desirable Porsche 911 Soft Window Targa was delivered new to the United States and specified in elegant Agua Blue over black upholstery, a sophisticated and period-correct color combination. According to its accompanying Kardex, the car was further equipped from new with desirable and optional Recaro seats and Dunlop 165-15 tires. Importantly, the Kardex also confirms the presence of its matching-numbers engine and transmission.

Acquired by its current owner in the early 2000s, this example has since benefited from an extensive, long-term restoration carried out over the course of more than a decade. The restoration reflects a clear commitment to preserving and enhancing the car to a very high standard, with careful attention paid throughout to both cosmetic presentation and mechanical integrity. During this process, the car was refinished in striking Ruby Red over black upholstery.

Today, the car presents as an exceptionally well-restored example of Porsche's landmark Soft Window Targa, combining desirable factory specifications, matching-numbers mechanical components, and long-term enthusiast ownership. Rarely do these early Targas emerge with such a compelling combination of provenance, specification, and restoration quality, making this example a particularly attractive opportunity for collectors and marque enthusiasts alike.
