THE MINI MOKE
The Mini Moke is one of the most recognizable and unconventional vehicles to emerge from Britain during the 1960s. Originally conceived by the British Motor Corporation as a lightweight military utility vehicle, the Moke ultimately found fame as a fun-loving recreational car synonymous with beach resorts, coastal towns, and carefree motoring.
Based on the mechanical components of the classic Mini, the Mk1 Moke utilized a compact front-wheel-drive layout and lightweight construction that made it nimble, simple, and surprisingly capable. Power came from the dependable Mini-sourced inline 4-cylinder engine paired with a four-speed manual transmission, delivering modest performance but excellent maneuverability and charm.
Distinctive for its minimal bodywork, open-air configuration, and slab-sided styling, the Moke featured removable canvas weather equipment, low seating positions, and exposed simplicity that gave it a character unlike virtually any other vehicle of its era. With no conventional doors and a highly utilitarian design, the Moke perfectly captured the spirit of relaxed leisure motoring.
Though initially unsuccessful in military applications due to its limited ground clearance, the Moke found lasting popularity in resort destinations throughout the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Australia, becoming closely associated with beach culture and celebrity ownership during the 1960s and 1970s.
Today, early Mk1 examples are especially sought after for their purity of design, charming simplicity, and direct connection to the iconic original Mini. Compact, cheerful, and endlessly charismatic, the Mini Moke remains one of the most beloved cult classics of the British motoring world.
THE CAR OFFERED
This particular Mini Moke has been transformed into a rolling work of art by Lucas Beaufort — the Cannes-born painter, muralist, and street artist whose bold, interlocking figures and uplifting philosophy centered around joy, tolerance, and human connection have earned him an international following, along with collaborations with Nike, Adidas, Vans, and The North Face among others.
Beaufort's signature visual language — vivid, interwoven abstract forms that evolve into human figures, animals, and flowers — finds an extraordinary canvas in the Moke's clean, unadorned bodywork. The car's simple geometric surfaces and open-air architecture lend themselves naturally to the treatment, allowing the artwork to envelop the vehicle much like a mural inhabits a wall: completely, confidently, and without compromise.
His totemic character "Gus Gus," the eyeless bird carrying a flower as a symbol of peace and non-judgment, may also appear within the composition, as seen throughout many of Beaufort's most personal works. The result is a compelling union of two icons: one a landmark of 1960s British industrial design, the other a celebrated voice in contemporary street art — together creating something that transcends both the automotive and artistic worlds alike.
Chassis no. 823405 is finished in dark green over a matching dark green interior and complemented by a dark green soft top. Fully restored to a high standard, the Moke has been further enhanced through Beaufort's one-of-one artistic treatment. Additional features include steel wheels, a full-size spare, and a modern stereo system with custom front and rear speaker enclosures. Equal parts collectible automobile and contemporary art installation, this Mini Moke stands as a truly unique expression of creativity and design.
