1983 Yamaha 49cc Bop II (LC50) Project
Frame no. 5F1-002525
Engine no. 5F1-002525
Looking very much like it was inspired by Honda's ST70, the Yamaha Bop II (LC50) was sold under that name in Europe, as the Champ in the USA, and as the Malic in Japan. The LC50 was a 49cc moped with two-speed automatic transmission and shaft final drive, while other notable features - for a moped - included a vacuum-operated fuel tap and an automatic choke.
Yamaha's line of so-called 'soft bikes' had commenced in 1977 with the Passol moped. The latter was intended to meet the expected increase in demand for motorcycles among women, hence the step-thru design which made it easy for them to ride, even in skirts. The range progressed via the Passola and the MA50 Carrot (yes, really) before the LC50 arrived in 1979. According to Yamaha: "In addition to being shaft-driven like the Carrot, it had small, but wide tires and provided a spirited, sporty ride as well as smart, fashionable styling." Its maximum design speed was 30mph.
A Yamaha ultra-lightweight rarely seen in the UK, this Bop II comes with a (clear) HPI report stating that it was first registered in the UK in 1983. There are no other documents with the machine, which currently displays a total of 1,474 miles on the odometer and is offered for restoration. Prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves regarding this motorcycle's condition, completeness, and authenticity prior to bidding.
