THE NASH SIX

Charles W. Nash had served as president of General Motors until 1916, when he left the corporation to acquire the Thomas B. Jeffery Company of Kenosha, Wisconsin, and put his own name above the door. Nash Motors grew rapidly thereafter on the strength of engineering discipline and conservative finance — the firm was said to manufacture a higher proportion of its own components than any rival, and its 1922 cars were the first American-built automobiles to adopt rubber engine mounts. Annual output climbed into the tens of thousands by the mid-1920s, with Nash settling comfortably among the most successful of the independents. Central to that rise was an overhead-valve 248.9-cubic-inch straight-six producing 55 horsepower at 2,400 rpm — a refined and unusually sophisticated specification for the period, at a time when most of Detroit still favored the sidevalve.

The Model 696 was the two-passenger roadster within Nash's 1924 six-cylinder 690 range. Listed at $1,240, it was the least expensive body in the series but also its sportiest, delivering open-air motoring with a lively six-cylinder engine and well-finished detailing for the same money as a fully equipped Model T Ford. On its 121-inch wheelbase, with long hood, cowl lights, and nickel brightwork, the 696 today represents one of the more charismatic and usable nickel-era tour cars available.

THE CAR OFFERED

This 1924 Model 696 carries Harrah Automobile Collection tag no. 1032 and is understood to have been acquired from the 1984 dispersal of the late William F. Harrah's legendary Reno collection for $13,000, remaining in the care of Ted Bacon and the Minden Automotive Museum to the present day. Finished in Light Grey with grey fenders, black accents, and a black cloth top, it is offered as an older restoration, eager for recommissioning. Equipment includes Light Grey disc wheels on Goodyear 5.25-21 tires, a rear-mounted spare, Monogram drum headlamps, nickel brightwork, the OHV six fed by its Marvel updraft carburetor, and the original Harrah's inventory tag. Paint is dulled with age, upholstery remains sound, the top is aged but tight, and the engine compartment presents honest and aged. Strong Nevada provenance and a sporting body style presents an exciting restoration opportunity for the decerning enthusiast.
