THE LEXINGTON MINUTE MAN SIX

Founded by Kinsey Stone in 1909, the Lexington Motor Company, named after Lexington, Kentucky, relocated to Connersville, Indiana the following year. By 1912, Lexington was producing a brace of four-cylinder models of 40 and 50hp, and later that same year was acquired by motor components manufacturer E W Ansted. Ansted had started out as a maker of cart springs, and soon after the Lexington acquisition secured a contract to manufacture the six-cylinder Howard automobile. The latter was not produced after 1914, by which time there was a 41hp six-cylinder Lexington in the range alongside a smaller 24hp four. The Ansted Engineering Company was one of E W's subsidiaries, and many Lexington's used Ansted engines. While not in the same league as Ford, Lexington was far from a minor player, making 6,000 cars in 1920 and more than 10,000 in 1921. Highly respectable figures no doubt boosted by the marque's 1, 2 placing at the famous Pikes Peak hill climb in 1920. Sadly, the early Twenties would turn out to be Lexington's heyday. Hard hit by the post-war depression, Lexington went bust, but continued under receivership for a few more years until its factory was taken over by Auburn in 1927. Lexington for model years 1924 and 1925 would offer two models, the Concord, a 65 hp six-cylinder on a 119" chassis, and the Minute Man, a 72 hp six-cylinder on a 123" chassis. The various body styles on offer included both 5 and 7 passenger touring cars, sedans, coupes, 5 passenger Royal Coach, and 5 passenger Brougham.

THE CAR OFFERED

This very tidy 5 passenger touring version has quite the stage presence. From the very stoic emblem of the Lexington Minute Man, representative of the Minutemen elite division of the Massachusetts Militia from the American Revolution to the fitted running board trunk, and the very handsome coach work. It is rumored to have been purchased from a Hollywood backlot in the 1960's where it was reportedly used in period films. Most likely what saved this example. This extremely rare and honest Lexington Minute Man has been on static display at Ted Bacon's Minden Automotive Museum. Presenting an exciting restoration and recommissioning project to return this fabulous example, of a seldom seen marque, to the road.
