THE CAR OFFERED

From 1916 all Paiges were six cylinder powered. In 1922 the 249 cubic inch 6-44 was built by Paige, the larger 6-66 sourced from Continental. The three-speed manual transmission was supplied by Warner.

Paige's accomplishments and performance were demonstrated on January 21, 1921, when Ralph Mulford drove a sporty Paige 6-66 roadster on the sand at Daytona Beach to an American record for a stock car turning a 35.01 second measured mile, 102.8 miles per hour. It was the first accurately and officially set American mile record for a stock car.

The accomplishment of Mulford and Paige led Paige to add "Daytona" to the boattail roadster's name in 1922.

Paige made no secret of its accomplishment and it was featured in advertising. Although few 6-66 Daytonas were built the publicity brought attention and sales to other, more practical, Paige cars and in 1923 43,556 Paiges (and lower-priced Jewetts) were built, almost 6 times Paige production in 1922.

This is an armature ready to be completed with a sleek roadster body in the image of the Paige 6-66 Daytona. It has the appropriate Continental 8A engine, gearbox, axles, chassis and rear wheel brakes. There is, other than the firewall and the pair of rudimentary seats, no bodywork. The chassis and suspension have a quick preservative coating of yellow paint over otherwise rust pitted metal. The radiator surround is bare brass without nickel or chrome plating and there are two seats with aged and cracked old upholstery loosely assembled to the chassis.

This is about how Paige, or any other manufacturer of the Twenties, would have delivered a new chassis a coachbuilder, although most would have had the manufacturer's hood, cowl and front fenders.

An oddity is coil overload springs clamped to the rear axle between the semi-elliptics. The chassis number, which should be under the left seat, has not been found.

Paige was one of the first manufacturers to apply imaginative names to its coachwork. In 1922 in addition to the famous Daytona roadster, Paige buyers could choose from the 6-44 Ardmore Sport or the 6-66 Sunflower 7-passenger Sedan in addition to descriptive coupes, sedans and touring cars. The diversity gives extra flexibility to the next owner's plans for this 6-66 chassis although Daytona will always be the most attractive choice.
