THE CAR OFFERED

The Marmon Model 34 stands as one of the most technically sophisticated American automobiles of its era. Designed under the direction of Howard Marmon and his chief engineer, the Model 34 introduced aluminum construction on a broad scale, with the engine, transmission case, crankcase, and much of the body structure fabricated from the lightweight metal — a practice then almost unknown in series production. The result was a car that was both lighter and stronger than its contemporaries, and capable of a refinement of performance that placed it in direct competition with Packard and Peerless at the top of the American market. The Model 34's engine, a large overhead-valve six of considerable displacement, was noted for its smoothness and flexibility.

This Model 34 Touring is presented in the striking combination of persimmon coachwork over black fenders, with black leather upholstery and black leatherette hood trim. The specification includes the Van Sicklen drum speedometer, a Waltham dashboard clock, and a Moto Meter — a pleasing ensemble of period instruments. White wire wheels on 6.00-23 tires, a rear-mounted spare, and folding jump seats complete what is a well-appointed touring specification.

A largely original, unrestored example, this Marmon presents honestly. The original upholstery and top are cracked and torn, and the paint, while sound, is noted as "quick" — that is, commensurate with age but lacking depth. A dent is present on the right body panel between the doors.

The engine compartment, while needing tidying, shows as one would expect for an unrestored car, and the chassis was painted assembled rather than stripped and detailed. Unused in decades, it will no doubt make for a loving touring machine after recomissioning. The Marmon Model 34 is a highly desirable and increasingly rare example of early American engineering excellence.
