THE PREMIER MODEL 6-C

The Premier Motor Manufacturing Company of Indianapolis, Indiana, was among the most progressive of America's early automakers, and by 1918 had established a reputation for engineering refinement that placed it comfortably among the country's prestige marques. The Model 6-C was powered by a smooth overhead-valve six-cylinder engine — a configuration that Premier had championed ahead of many rivals — and was offered in a variety of handsome body styles. Perhaps most remarkable among the model's features was the Cutler-Hammer Magnetic Gear Shift, a semi-automatic shifting mechanism that eliminated the need for a conventional clutch pedal during gear changes, representing an early and sophisticated attempt at driver convenience that anticipated later developments by several decades.

The Foursome Touring body style on this example is a particularly graceful expression of mid-teens American coachwork, featuring a close-coupled configuration with dual cowls and shapely door tops that lend the car a rakish, purposeful appearance.

THE CAR OFFERED

Finished in blue over black fenders, with black leather upholstery and black leatherette hood trim, the car presents in a manner consistent with its cosmetic restoration classification. The varnished wood spoke wheels and Twilite headlights further enhance its handsome period character. Dual rear-mounted spare wheels add a practical and visually appealing note.

The paint, upholstery, and top are all described as sound older material. The engine compartment and chassis are orderly but unrestored, and the car was repainted assembled — characteristics consistent with a quick cosmetic restoration undertaken some years ago. This is an attractive and mechanically interesting survivor from Indianapolis's great era of automobile manufacturing.
