THE FORD MODEL TT TRUCK

Specialty vendors like Lippard-Stewart were building thousands of trucks based on repurposed Ford Model T cars and bare chassis purchased from the factory. Henry Ford, it can be assumed, didn't like that, so in 1917 Ford Motor Company began building the Model TT with a one-ton rated chassis but still powered by the standard Model T automobile drivetrain.

An urban fire department would prefer purpose-built fire trucks from American LaFrance or Ahrens-Fox with big, lazy high torque engines that could pump for days. Rural departments, on the other hand knew the positive attributes of Fords – reliability, ready parts support, known mechanicals and light weight. The Model TT was an important gift to them and myriad suppliers jumped in to meet their needs. They didn't have the luxury of specialized apparatus to meet specific firefighting demands and the Ford Triple Combination – water tank, hoses, a powerful pump, and chemical tanks for incendiary suppression or when there was no water - were ideal.

THE CAR OFFERED

This 1926 Ford Model TT Triple Combination Pumper is believed to have been originally used by the Soledad Fire Company, a town along US Highway 101 in the Salinas Valley. It was acquired by the Harrah's Automobile Collection in 1958 and subsequently restored in 1963.

It is simply magnificent.

It is a rich and vibrant red, embellished with gold coachlines and thin striping. It is equipped with a Sterling Siren Fire Horn hand-operated siren, a two-section extension ladder, two lengths of suction hose, a searchlight, an array of nozzles, 2½" cotton and 1" rubber jacket hoses, axe, soda and acid resupply tanks for the chemical system, a bell, red front and rear warning lights, two red lens chrome plated Dietz kerosene lanterns, a Metropolitan portable hand pump tank. There are spares for both the 33x5 rear and 30x3½ front tires. Gauges, fittings and valves are everywhere.

A Harrah's Gold Star restoration, it is emblematic of the pride rural volunteer fire departments have always taken in their equipment, their skill and their dedication to saving the lives and property of their neighbors.
