THE FORD MODEL A

When Ford introduced the Model T's successor in1928 it started over again at the beginning of the alphabet, naming it the Model A. In appearance, however, the break was not dramatic. The 1928-29 Model As looked like evolutions of the T, angular lines and all.

That changed in 1930 when the Model A got a substantial exterior redesign even as the proven reliable 4-cylinder 40hp engine and chassis were essentially unchanged. Despite the Wall Street Crash of 1929 Ford's production exceeded 1 million cars in calendar year 1930 helped by a modest price drop.

Most Model As were bodied at Ford but from 1929 on additional coachwork was added from Briggs and Murray, appealing to Ford customers who wanted better finished and upholstered coachwork. One of these was the four-door Town Sedan built by both coachbuilders. Both were popular even as the Briggs Town Sedan was priced $10 more than the Murray and a total of 104,935 were built in calendar 1930.

THE CAR OFFERED

This Murray bodied 1930 Ford Model A Town Sedan is an excellent example. Equipped with a windshield visor, Sparton horn, rear-mounted spare and Ford script headlights, it was restored for the Minden Automotive Museum by Charlie Case in Carson City, Nevada and completed in 2005.

It is finished in black and the upholstery and interior trim is in olive green cloth. Fastidiously restored, it has seen little use and is still in only slightly aged restored condition. The engine compartment is still like new.

A quality older restoration, it is an excellent example of a milestone car that is beautifully done and meticulously maintained. Even the part number on the fan belt is still crisp and sharp. A little careful and sympathetic recommissioning and it should be ready to go.
