THE CAR OFFERED

This 1918 Dort Model 6 Fleur-de-Lys Roadster was a three-seat body style popular at the time. It powered by a 192 cubic inch Lycoming-built "French type" engine with nearly square dimensions of 4 inch bore and 4⅝ inch stroke. At a then-rapid 1,900 rpm it made some 33-brake horsepower. A three-speed sliding gear transmission and shaft drive to the rear wheels used live axles with semi-elliptical leaf springs. Brakes were mechanically operated on the rear wheels only.

It was acquired for the Minden Automotive Museum in about 1975 from Howard Raish in Temecula, California. It is titled by its Lycoming engine number but in the file, there is a copy of a Dort Motor Car Co. plate with the car number A 14392 which is in the correct sequence for 1916-1918 Dort automobiles in Grace Brigham's The Serial Number Book for U.S. Cars 1900-1975.

It is equipped with a Stewart speedometer (showing 17,836 miles at cataloging), has varnished wood spoke wheels (Dort's catalog says "Some people prefer wire wheel equipment. This we supply for $60 extra, including spare wheel" on top of the $695 F.O.B. Flint price of the roadster), a rear-mounted spare, 30x3½ tires and a raked, opening windshield.

Finished in dark green with black fenders and aprons, the upholstery is black leather and the top, which covers all three seats when erected and folds flat above the rear deck, is black cloth. Dort's catalog describes it thus: "There are no other three-passenger roadsters remotely comparable to it in style, comfort and snap" terms that still apply to its design and proportions today.

It was restored some years ago and has mostly sound old paint with edge chips and scratches. The upholstery and top are sound. The engine compartment and chassis are older, dusty and show years of museum display. It is an important piece of American automobile history.

Without Dallas Dort and the carriage business he shared with Billy Durant, Durant may never have embarked upon his monumental journey to create, then recover General Motors.
