THE CAR OFFERED

The Grant company started out building a "natty" 12hp four-cylinder "miniature motor car" in 1913. Its backers soon realized that in 1913 a $495 miniature motor car was no competition for Henry Ford's Model T and its counterparts. They regrouped, moved to Findlay, Ohio and in 1916 came out with a 6-cylinder 20hp full size car by now based in a new Cleveland, Ohio factory.

War work kept Grant going during WWI and the new Model H in 1919 promised postwar success. The 1920-21 recession proved to be Grant's undoing, however and the 1921 45hp Model HX was not able to rescue Grant from liquidation in 1922.

Priced at $1,550, however, the Grant HX Touring was a notable value. It had a 199 cubic inch overhead valve inline six engine that was more than sophisticated and powerful (55bhp) enough at the time to support its price. The chassis was sufficiently conventional (live axles, semi-elliptical leaf springs, mechanical rear wheel brakes) that buyers comprehended its function. A promising premise, Grant faded away after 1923.

This 1921 Grant Model HX Touring car was acquired for the Minden Automotive Museum in 1981 from Chris Anderson. A memo from 1981 in the file records the transaction:

5/19/81 $1,100 Deposit in silver dollars and silver certificates
6/1/81 $900 Payment in traveler's checks
6/22/81 $1,500 Payment in cash
7/6/81 Balance by check

Tucked away in Minden now for some 45 years the Grant HX has a Van Sicklen drum speedometer, varnished wood spoke wheels, 32x4 double-sided whitewall tires, rear-mounted spare, an outside spotlight/mirror, Moto Meter on a winged radiator cap and a folding steering wheel. Lighting is from a pair of C.M. Hall brass trimmed drum headlights.

An older restoration finished in red with black fenders, black leather upholstery and a black leatherette top. The paint is sound but scratched and edge chipped. The upholstery and top are sound, and the engine compartment is orderly with some oil mist and storage dust.

A marque that never realized its potential after the 1921 post-WWI recession, this is a handsome touring car with a sophisticated overhead valve 45hp engine. It is rare and attractive, sound and complete, offering welcome possibilities for recommissioning.
