THE CAR OFFERED

When John Gary Anderson started the Anderson Motor Company in 1916, he already had years of experience building wagons and carriages at the family-owned Rock Hill Buggy Company in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Located southwest of Charlotte, at the time Rock Hill was a railroad town. Today it is the 5th largest city in South Carolina.

The Anderson wasn't the only car built below the Mason-Dixon Line (the Standard Catalog lists 175) but it is generally conceded to be one of the best. That is largely due to John Gary Anderson's coachbuilding experience as his Andersons are noted for the quality of their coachwork and colorful finishes.

Mechanically, the Anderson was, as were many of its contemporaries, an assembled car with components chosen, "selected" would be Anderson's term of choice, from recognized suppliers. Bodies were Anderson's specialty and the marque is generally credited with several innovative body designs. The 1920 S-30 is powered by a Continental 7R L-head six-cylinder engine making 55 horsepower. With a 3-speed transmission and leaf spring live axle suspension and rear wheel brakes it is representative of its time.

This 1920 Anderson S-30 is a good example of the marque. It is finished in bright yellow accented by black fenders and aprons with upholstery and interior trim in brown leather. The top is beige cloth. The way is lighted by Deitz Sentinel drum headlights. There is a useful complement of instruments including Phinney Walker clock and Steward drum speedometer. Jump seats at the rear bring capacity to seven passengers while body color wire wheels support 34x4½ whitewall tires. The driver's entry and exit are aided by a folding steering wheel. Visibility is helped by a driver's side spotlight.

There is no windshield wiper but both the upper and lower windshield panels open and there is a generous overhang at the front of the top.

The older restoration has good paint, upholstery, a tight-fitting top, chrome and an attractive but aging engine compartment and chassis.

On static display at the Minden Automotive Museum for many years, it has been well-preserved and promises to be a rewarding project for a Southern collector who wishes to document the fact that, long before BMW and Mercedes-Benz arrived in the classical South, there were marques that embodied the region's persistence, imagination and craftsmanship.

It is one of but a handful of Andersons to survive and has a story that deserves to be told more widely.
