THE CAR OFFERED
It did not take long for light trucks, and the pickup truck in particular, to become an important contributor to the success of the American automobile industry. Ford alone built some 77,000 light trucks in 1929. While automobile sales suffered in 1930 in the aftermath of the 1929 Wall Street crash, Ford's light truck sales increased to over 86,000 units then grew again as the Great Depression worsened in 1931 to over 98,000 units.
Part of the growing appeal of light trucks, and pickups in particular, was introduction of closed cab models which were more comfortable in year-round use. At Ford, too, the new Model A with its larger and more powerful four-cylinder engine and conventional three-speed sliding gear transmission was an important factor. The early Model A pickups carried forward the body designs of the final Model T pickups with square corner, small rear window cab designs. Closed cab Model A pickups received new cab designs in May of 1930 with larger rear windows and a rounded roof profile and corners.
This 1929 Ford Model A Closed Cab Pickup has been the beneficiary of an older restoration to such high standards that it was obviously the pride and joy of the owner who commissioned it. It was acquired by the Harrah's Automobile Collection in 1985.
Cosmetically it is very good with excellent paint in the Rock Moss Green that was common on Ford commercial vehicles. The fenders and wire wheels are black as is the cobra grain leatherette roof covering. The cab beltline and pickup bed are tastefully coachlined in cream. The interior is black leatherette.
It is nicely equipped, too, with 4.40/4.50-21 tires, Ford script headlights, a single leatherette covered sidemount on the left side, cobra grain covered windshield visor, top hinged windshield, single manual windshield wiper, a Ford Moto Meter, winged radiator cap and a Sparton horn. The engine compartment is neat, orderly and correctly presented in all respects.
This is a quality older restoration that has been thoughtfully preserved at Harrah's and the National Automobile Museum and should be a straightforward project to recommission and get back on the road.
