THE CHEVROLET AB NATIONAL

Chevrolet had a surprise in store for its competitors in the truck market for 1929. Introduced just in time to enjoy the last optimistic year of the post-WWI era before the Great Depression, Chevrolet replaced its tried-and-true overhead valve four-cylinder engine for its pickup fleet with a new overhead valve six with an additional 24 cubic inches of displacement and 11 more horsepower.

No longer was it enough to sell a truck that was reliable and had low speed hauling capability. Light truck buyers now responded to the same power, smoothness and performance expectations that appealed to buyers of passenger cars. What buyers wanted was "a six for the price of a four", and that is exactly what Chevy offered for 1929.

For the run-out year of 1928 the Chevy four benefited from years in production and developments in reliability and performance. In preparation for the six to come in the next year, Chevy lengthened the chassis by four inches and, perhaps most important of all, added four-wheel brakes.

THE CAR OFFERED

Acquired by the Harrah's Automobile Collection in 1962 from Charles Leach of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There was only one prior owner, Paul Icke, known to the seller at the time. Finished in Bell Green with green coachlines, the hood and fenders are black, and the interior is likewise upholstered in black leatherette. It has a black painted wood spoke wheels, 4.40/4.50/21 tires, a vacuum windshield wiper, spare stashed under the bed floor and electric lights. The roof is covered in black leatherette and extends forward to create a windshield visor.

This is believed to be a Harrah's restoration and has been on display for fifty years, having a Harrah's last started sticker dated 3-6-75 on the windshield. For display purposes it is believed to have been drained of coolant and fuel and needs general recommissioning. It is in such good condition, particularly cosmetically, that should be readily accomplished.
