THE CAR OFFERED

The 1936 Ford, now designated Model 68, continued the body styles of 1935 but with new rear fenders and a revised, wraparound, chrome grille of vertical slats that advanced a more streamlined design. The design evolution was advanced by Edsel Ford and E.T. "Bob" Gregorie who had joined Ford in 1932. The two worked in concert on several concept cars for Edsel and the evolving production body designs were a product of their cooperation.

Gregorie had cut his design teeth with boats and the 1936 front end reflected some of that thinking. Fortunately, it has turned out to be one of the most attractive and enduring years for Ford production designs, a car that looks good from any angle and capitalizes on the performance reputation of Ford's Flathead V-8.

The phaeton was a classic body style but diminishing through the Thirties. Phaetons were the four-seat, four-door counterpart of roadsters. Designed to be as light as possible a phaeton typically had side curtains instead of roll up windows. In 1936 it weighed only 80 pounds more than the two-door DeLuxe roadster and even less, although by only eight pounds, than the two-door cabriolet.

This 1936 Ford Model 68 DeLuxe Phaeton is one of only 5,555 built. It was offered only with DeLuxe trim which included a chrome frame for the raked windshield, chrome headlight surrounds and dual horns concealed behind small grilles low on the front fender catwalks. In addition, it has chrome-trimmed wheel spiders, Firestone 6.00-16 whitewall tires, wind wings, an enclosed rear-mounted spare, dual outside mirrors, Unity fog lights, radio and a banjo-spoke steering wheel. It is an early production example, so it has only a single vacuum operated windshield wiper.

It appears to have been restored some time ago, then has been driven while being conscientiously maintained. It was acquired by the National Automobile Museum in 2025. There is a torn seam in the rear seat cushion but otherwise the brown leatherette upholstery is presentable and usable. The top is beige cloth. Finished in Washington Blue with Tacoma Cream coachlines, the paint has microblisters, scratches and edge chips. The engine compartment is tidy with some road grime on the chassis. Evidently, the fuel pressure regulator has been more recently replaced, and the intake manifold and carburetor are in good shape, without fuel seepage staining.

More than good enough to drive, enjoy and be proud to own, its recent acquisition by the NAM means it has not been displayed without coolant or fuel. It is potentially a delightful project and a great place to establish a long-term relationship with a lightweight Ford V-8 with room for a family.
