THE CAR OFFERED

Studebaker, which traced its history back to mid-nineteenth century wagon building, never let grass grow under its feet after starting to build automobiles in 1902. A succession of notable managers and engineers passed through its South Bend, Indiana factory. By 1920, all Studebakers had six-cylinder engines with performance befitting the quality of their conventional chassis and features.

Powered by a 354 cubic inch L-head six-cylinder engine, the series EK Big Six was introduced in 1922 and remained, virtually unchanged, in production through 1924. A total of 48,892 were built in that time span, proving its quality and reliability. The model's longevity also benefitted from Studebaker's continuous efforts to incorporate improvements during production.

This 1924 Studebaker was part of the Harrah's Automobile Collection in the early 1960s and appears to have been restored there. With four-door sedan coachwork by Fisher, the EK sedan was the most expensive car Studebaker offered in 1924 at $2,685 and this example is highly equipped. It has a leatherette covered luggage trunk, disc wheels with 33x4½ tires, dual sidemounts, Van Sicklen drum speedometer, Waltham clock, a top-hinged windshield, Folberth vacuum windshield wiper, tinted glass windshield visor, lantern-shaped cowl lights, running board kick plates and a Studebaker logo Moto Meter.

Finished in maroon with black fenders and roof, the interior is upholstered in brown velour. The rear window has a pull-down shade flanked by interior courtesy lights. The spacious rear compartment has plenty of room for the two jump seats. The two large quarter windows also had pull-down shades but one is missing and the other is broken.

Although this Studebaker has been restored, the interior trim and upholstery appear to be carefully preserved and original with some wear on the driver's seat. The interior wood trim also is in good shape. The engine compartment is orderly but shows the effect of years on display. The exterior paint and brightwork are sound, although there are some application defects beginning to show and some edge chips.

A handsome car that should be straightforward to recommission, this is an excellent and representative example of the top-of-the-line Studebaker.
