THE MERCURY 99-A

Ford Motor Company's Mercury division made its public debut for 1939, slotting neatly between the Ford V8 and the Lincoln-Zephyr to address a growing market for refined mid-priced automobiles.

The 99-A Town Sedan was among the first Mercurys to reach the public, powered by the proven flathead V8 in a handsomely styled body that borrowed cues from the more expensive Lincoln range. A particular period curiosity is the retention of rear-hinged back doors — a configuration already becoming obsolete at other manufacturers but retained here, lending the car a distinctive character.

THE CAR OFFERED

Finished in the Mercury-exclusive color Tropical Green, this 99A presents as a visually maintained, largely original example. The paint is aged but well preserved and the chrome is serviceable, while the 6.00-16 Universal tires and original hubcaps with trim rings are in keeping with the car's honest character. A factory heater is fitted but there is no radio.

Period correct seat covers envelope otherwise well-kept original fabric upholstered seats. Much of the interior has withstood the test of time, although the steering wheel shows cracks and some of the Bakelite-style switches have perished. A two-inch paint scrape is present on the left windshield post, with additional scrapes having been accumulated in the last 90 years.

This first-year Mercury represents an affordable and increasingly collectible piece of American automotive history.
