THE BUICK SPECIAL

By 1937 the Buick Special had firmly established itself as one of the most accomplished automobiles in the American middle-price field — a car that offered genuine engineering sophistication and Harley Earl's finest styling at a price considerably below what its driving character might suggest. The 1937 restyle, the work of Frank Hershey's team under Earl, was longer, lower, and wider than the 1936 cars, with longer fenders bearing blunt squared-off trailing edges and a newly divided grille with horizontal chrome bars. All 1937 Buicks carried Fisher Body's all-steel Turret Top construction throughout, a genuine advance in rigidity and weatherproofing over composite construction. Mechanically, the 1937 Special received a longer-stroke engine boosting displacement to 248 cubic inches and output to an even 100 horsepower. The engine — Buick's celebrated overhead-valve Dynaflash straight-eight — was a point of genuine distinction in a class where flathead engines predominated. New for all 1937 Buicks were a hypoid rear axle, improved generator, standard windshield defroster, front and rear anti-roll bars, and a steering-wheel horn ring. The four-door Touring Sedan with trunk was the most popular body style in the Series 40 range and Buick's single best-selling vehicle for the entire 1937 model year; total production across all Series 40 body styles reached 152,773 units, reflecting a marque at the height of its pre-war confidence.

THE CAR OFFERED

Chassis C7261 presents in Wellington Gray, paint code 505 — a metallic silver-gray that wears particularly well on the long, disciplined Turret Top silhouette of the 41-S body. The odometer shows 37,319 miles and is accompanied by a 1998 title in the name of the previous owner. It presents as a tidy driver — sound and useable rather than a concours restoration — with the honest character of a well-kept example that has seen occasional use over the decades. The overhead-valve Dynaflash straight-eight is the mechanical centrepiece, a notably sophisticated unit for the period and one that distinguishes the Special from its flathead-engined contemporaries at every price point. In Wellington Gray, the four-door Touring Sedan makes an attractive and accessible entry into pre-war American motoring.
