When Triumph adopted unitary construction for its vertical twins, the 5TA Speed Twin (introduced in September 1958) would be the second model of this new family, joining the 350cc Twenty-One/3TA launched the previous year. The 5TA closely followed the lines of its '350' predecessor, there being little to distinguish it mechanically apart from a larger bore, raised gearing, and larger-section rear tyre. The controversial 'bathtub' rear enclosure introduced on the Twenty-One was retained.

Introduced for the 1960 season, the Tiger 100A was the sports version of the 5TA, and like the rest of the Triumph range featured the 'bathtub' rear enclosure. A raised compression ratio and 'hotter' cams helped the Tiger to a top speed in the region of 90mph, while the retention of a single carburettor meant that fuel economy did not suffer unduly, a gallon of fuel lasting for around 80 miles of restrained riding. The T100A was replaced as Triumph's half-litre sports roadster for 1962.

This motorcycle is believed to combine a circa 1966 Triumph 5TA frame with a circa 1961 Triumph T100A engine. The current private owner acquired the machine in 2022 as a dismantled 'basket case' project from Wassell Parts (Staffordshire), who supplied the exhaust system. It has since undergone an extensive rebuild, with significant expenditure on components and professional wheel rebuilding (a substantial quantity of supporting invoices is available for inspection). Notable features include twin Amal Concentric carburettors; alloy wheel rims; a 2-into-1 exhaust; and a TLS front brake

Since completion the Triumph has never been started or tested, the vendor having moved on to other projects; its condition and completeness are unknown, and close inspection is highly recommended. The successful purchaser will need to apply to register this motorcycle, which is offered unregistered and without any form of registration document. Accompanying paperwork consists of the following:

6V regulator/rectifier instructions
Original 2022 ebay purchase listing
Haynes development history book
Haynes workshop manual
Extensive collection of invoices
Parts catalogue
Parts listing

An attractive machine! This motorcycle will require recommissioning and/or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
