Introduced in 1969, the Honda ST70 Dax evolved from the hugely successful Monkey Bike family, which had begun with the diminutive CZ100 of 1963. Powered by Honda's renowned and dependable four-stroke single-cylinder engine, the ST70 retained the compact proportions and folding handlebars of its smaller siblings, while gaining a more substantial pressed-steel frame and an increased 72cc capacity, making it a considerably more practical proposition.
According to noted Honda authority Roger Etcell, the model's distinctive "Dax" name was inspired by its resemblance to the dachshund, the long pressed-steel backbone frame recalling the characteristic profile of the breed. Today, early ST-series machines are highly regarded by collectors and enthusiasts, with original examples particularly sought after.
Acquired by the present private vendor at Bonhams' Spring Stafford Sale in 2003 (Lot 329), from the dispersal of the Teale Collection, this ST70 is believed to have had notably few custodians throughout its life. The accompanying HPI report records just four previous keepers, with the preceding owner reportedly having acquired the machine in 1981. Since entering the current ownership, it has seen only limited use, spending much of the past two decades within private collections.
Following a lengthy period of storage, the Honda was gently recommissioned and recently ridden for approximately a quarter of a mile. The vendor reports that it started readily and ran smoothly through the gears. A short running video is available to view online.
The odometer currently records 8,663 miles, just four miles more than the 8,659 miles recorded on the 2003 MoT certificate. This exceptionally small increase is indicative of the machine's extremely limited use over the past two decades.
Presented in notably original and well-preserved condition, the ST70 appears to have been carefully maintained throughout its life. The air-cleaner housing covers are absent, for which replacement parts are readily available.
Accompanied by:
• V5C Registration Certificate
• 2003 MoT Certificate, recording 8,659 miles
• Owner's Manual
• Honda Vehicle Service Booklet, unused
• Copy workshop manual
• Ignition key and fuel cap key
A particularly appealing survivor from Honda's iconic Monkey Bike lineage, this early ST70 Dax combines distinctive styling, originality and considerable collector appeal. Its compact dimensions and folding handlebars make it equally suited to display, paddock or pit use, while its approachable four-stroke engine and easy-going character lend themselves to leisure riding and short-distance use.
A charming and highly original example of one of Honda's most enduringly popular small-capacity machines.
