One owner from new, 1961 Geier 49cc Safari Moped Project

Registration no. NFO 525
Frame no. unable to locate
Engine no. 3146038

The Sachs-engined Safari moped was manufactured in Germany by Geier-Werke GmbH of Lengerich in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The sole UK concessionaires were Messrs Stuart & Payne Ltd of London EC2, who advertised the machine as 'The Safari Sachs 50': "the new low-priced multi-speed moped of outstanding merit. Ruggedly built to stand up to the hard wear and tear of everyday travel. The Safari thrives on hard work – revels in the toughest conditions." The two-speed model was priced at 66 guineas and the three-speeder at 70 guineas.

A European moped rarely seen in the UK, this two-speed Geier Safari was purchased new in April 1961 by the late private owner and first registered as '86 CEW'. The private owner's late father used the Safari as everyday transport for a few years and also rode it on longer journeys while on holiday, as it only cost half a crown (2s 6d – 12.5p) to put it on the cross-Channel ferry! The Safari would run all day at 29mph while returning around 115 miles per gallon.

The private vendor's father gave the moped to him on his 19th birthday on condition that he did it up properly. The Safari was dismantled and resprayed as necessary, and a certain amount of mechanical work carried out. On completion in 1995 the machine was put back on the road with the current registration number: 'NFO 525'. It was used for a couple of years and then stored in the garage. The engine last ran within the last 10-15 years but the machine will need recommissioning/restoration before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. The machine is offered with its original old-style logbook; an old-style V5 registration document; various parts books, etc. Key not required.
