"Every driver who has more than a purely utilitarian interest in automobiles should drive a Mercedes-Benz 250SL at least once in his life. The car is an almost perfect yardstick against which to measure any other car. There are cars with better acceleration, cars with better brakes, cars with better roadholding. But there is no car we can think of that has such a remarkable, good balance of performance, safety and comfort, and has them in such an absolutely civilised structure. " - Car & Driver.

Introduced late in 1966, the 250 SL used the same bodyshell as the 230 SL which had founded Mercedes-Benz's spectacularly successful sports car dynasty, and which it replaced. Minor improvements were made to the interior but the major differences were the new 2.5-litre six-cylinder engine and disc brakes instead of drums at the rear. The top speed of around 120mph (193km/h) remained the same but the larger engine significantly improved flexibility and responsiveness. The 250 SL was built for just one full production year before being superseded by the 280 SL and is thus one of the rarest of the family. Christened 'Pagoda' after their distinctive cabin shape, these SL models were amongst the best-loved sports-tourers of their era and are highly sought after today.

This Mercedes-Benz 250 SL was delivered new to the French overseas territory Saint-Pierre and Miquelon in US specification. The car was originally finished in white with tan leather interior, and left the factory equipped with the desirable manual gearbox, soft-top and hardtop. The body number '3050' can still be found on the hardtop, bonnet, metal convertible hood cover, as well as on the underside of various interior parts including the door cards, dashboard cover, inside of the seat back rests, and the convertible hood frame.

When purchased by the vendor the Mercedes was in very original and largely solid condition; nevertheless, he decided to embark upon on an extensive restoration while preserving the car's originality. Luckily the body was very solid throughout so needed little work. The underside was dry-ice blasted and the body treated to a bare-metal respray. The interior was carefully restored while keeping the original leather and patina; new rubber mats were fitted and the chrome parts re-plated. The soft-top mechanism was cleaned and fitted with a new high quality 'Sonnenland' cloth hood in the original colour of creme. During restoration - carried out in 2014 and 2015 - the car was converted to the far more attractive European specification, which included the headlamps as well as the deletion of the side repeater indicators.

Upon completion the Mercedes participated in the prestigious Paleis Het Loo Concours and won a prize in its class. The car comes with extensive documentation including a copy of the Datenkarte, owner's manual, spare parts catalogue, Becker radio manual, FIVA documents (issued in 2016) together with invoices for the restoration and parts. Also included are Dutch registration documents and a certificate issued by the Dutch Mercedes-Benz Club.

The Mercedes-Benz 'Pagoda' is a timeless classic and they are not often offered in this level of restoration, and with documentation to match.
