Suzuki rewrote the 750-class rulebook when it launched the GSX-R750 back in 1985. The 'Gixxer's development had been strongly influenced by lessons learned from the works TT F1 and Endurance racers; lighter than a 600 and as powerful as a 1000, it made all other super-sports 750s seem flabby and slow. One of the modern era's few instant classics and the sole surviving Japanese 750cc sports bike until its recent deletion, the GSX-R750 has been a huge commercial success for Suzuki and enjoys cult status today.
Offered here is an example of the totally redesigned 'SRAD' version, which was first introduced in 1996. SRAD stood for Suzuki Ram Air Direct, a reference to the pressurised induction system, but arguably the most striking feature of the new Gixxer was its aluminium beam frame, which was based on that of the RGV500 Grand Prix bike. Suzuki were intent on producing a machine that would be competitive in the World Superbike Championship, hence the uncompromising approach to the SRAD's design.
The private vendor acquired this GSX-R750 in 2015 intending to restore it to concours condition after his retirement, only for ill heath to scupper the project. The Suzuki was purchased from the former head of Ducati UK Technical. According to our vendor: "I bought it as I realised it was in incredible condition, and as the previous owner to myself had a good record in the motorcycle industry. In super condition and a lovely, lovely motorcycle." Notable features include a Yoshimura exhaust system and new control levers, rear sets, wheels, etc.
The Suzuki is offered from the owner's private collection, all of which were ridden for no more than 2 miles following acquisition and then stored within the vendor's house on static display. Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require re-commissioning and/or restoration to a greater or lesser extent and thus is sold strictly as viewed. The odometer reading is 9,389 miles (at time of cataloguing/photography). Prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's history, originality, authenticity, mechanical condition and completeness (or otherwise) prior to bidding. It should be noted that the V5C Registration Certificate records the engine number as 'R731 – 0107513', whereas the actual number is 'R731 – 107513'. Additional documents include the previous-keeper V5C; a quantity of expired MoT certificates; various invoices; a Datatool user guide; and an owner's manual.
