Arguably Japan's most successful attempt at a traditional, British-style 'big twin', Yamaha's 650 debuted in 1969 as the XS1, progressing via the XS2 to the XS650. The design had been inspired by that of the 500cc twin built by Hosk, a German company Yamaha would later acquire as part of its purchase of Showa. Developed with assistance from ace road-racer Percy Tait, the XS650 banished the handling woes of its predecessors while retaining their torquey, bullet-proof, overhead-cam motor. Top speed was within a whisker of 110mph, while restrained riding could see fuel consumption approach 60mpg. In modified form the engine was used successfully in sidecar moto-cross and also by Yamaha in dirt-track racing in the USA. More recently the XS650 has become a favourite with customisers, who have found it the perfect 'blank canvas' for transformation into café racers, bobbers, scramblers, and flat trackers. The model's strong after-market support ensures plentiful parts supply and a wide range of styling options.
This striking Yamaha XS650 was purchased from Eddy's Moto on 7th June 2025; the bike cost £4,200 and since then has had a further £3,300 spent on parts for it (see large file of receipts). These include a complete clutch and plates, brake calliper, brake pads, brake shoes, master cylinder, air filters, brake light, control levers, silencers, wheels, tyres, carburettor parts, chain and sprockets, fork seals, rubbers, side stand, spark plugs and leads, fuel lines and taps, bulb holders, clamps, etc, etc. The tank and side panels' paintwork was left original. The result is a truly beautiful classic Japanese motorcycle. The Yamaha was last used in September 2026 on a 100-mile run.
The accompanying HPI report states that the machine was previously registered overseas and first registered in the UK on 15th June 2016. Two former UK keepers are noted. The Yamaha was last MoT tested on 14th June 2017, at which time the recorded mileage was 18,091. The current odometer reading is 19,132 miles. Offered with a VJMC dating certificate and a V5C document.
