• Highly original and extremely competitive
• Constructed by the late and renowned Joe Huffaker
• Originally commissioned by Paul Newman's racing associate, Bill Freeman
• Campaigned by its current owner in the Ultimate Cup Series in 2020 and 2021
• Approximately 390 bhp at 9,200 rpm for a weight of around 900 kg
Joe Huffaker (1927–2022) began building racing cars as early as the 1940s, before launching his professional career through a partnership with BMC following the competition success of his Austin-Healey 'Huffaker Special'. He subsequently produced a series of Genie sports cars powered by American V8 engines. In 1963, Huffaker entered the Indianapolis 500 under the MG banner.
The 1970s and 1980s proved particularly successful for Huffaker-prepared MG, Austin-Healey, Jaguar and Triumph models, with victories across the Can-Am, IMSA, SCCA and Trans-Am championships. Most notably, the Huffaker-prepared Pontiac Fieros achieved outstanding results in IMSA GTU, with Bob Earl securing ten victories and sixteen pole positions during the 1985 season alone.
Although the Ferrari 308 GTB was never conceived as a competition car, its inherent qualities were undeniable and quickly attracted the attention of independent constructors, most famously Michelotto. His Group 4 version enjoyed considerable success in rallying throughout Europe.
In the United States, Bill Freeman—close friend and racing associate of Paul Newman—identified the potential of the 308 and entered it into IMSA competition in the GTU category. Accordingly, in 1990, three cars were commissioned from Huffaker Motorsport by Newman Freeman Racing and CEO for the 1991 season. Built on tubular chassis derived from IndyCar technology, these 308s featured inboard pushrod suspension, Alcon brake calipers acting on 13-inch discs supplied by Coleman Racing Products, and 16-inch centre-lock BBS wheels. Pneumatic jacks enabled rapid lifting during pit stops.
Mechanically, the 3.0-litre quad-cam V8 was extensively reworked by Bill Pound Automotive, with the front of the block shortened to allow longitudinal rear mounting. The water pump was relocated, while the timing system was redesigned to accept Testarossa belts and adjustable pulleys. Custom-made camshafts were fitted, along with strengthened forged pistons and connecting rods. The 16 valves were optimised for both intake and exhaust, with titanium valve seats. Fuel injection was supplied by Hilborn components, managed by an EFI Technology control unit that also governed ignition for maximum efficiency. Lubrication was provided by a Weaver Bros dry-sump system. Producing approximately 390 bhp at 9,600 rpm, the engine was mated to a rear-mounted Hewland DGB five-speed gearbox.
The car was clothed in a composite body by Italian Design and Racing, echoing the styling cues of the Ferrari 288 GTO.
Unfortunately, changes to IMSA GTU regulations in 1991 prematurely ended the competitive career of the 308 GTB Huffaker. Built in just three examples, it saw only limited competition thereafter in SCCA GT2.
Chassis 003 arrived in France in 2008 after appearing at the Cavallino Classic in Monterey. Acquired by its current owner in 2017, it underwent a comprehensive overhaul in 2019 at Sébastien Darnand Moteur, including replacement of all four wheel bearings, fluid services and timing belts, as well as the installation of an automatic fire-extinguishing system. Since then, it has been driven by its owner at the 2019 Classic Days at Le Mans and in the Ultimate Cup Series at Dijon (2020) and Magny-Cours (2021).
Today, remarkably authentic and spared the excesses of prolonged competition, this Huffaker-Ferrari 308 GTB IMSA GTU represents a rare and fascinating chapter in the sporting history of the Prancing Horse in the United States. It would stand out in any marque-focused collection and is equally well suited to historic racing events or track days.
As a race car, it will be sold without a title but with accompanying invoices.

1990 Huffaker-Ferrari 308 GTB IMSA-GTU Race Car
Chassis numéro. 003
