THE MODEL 68

By 1936 Ford still had an advantage over its competitors: it offered eight-cylinder performance at similar prices to the six-cylinder cars offered by other automakers. The public certainly didn't mind, either, flocking to dealerships to buy more than 700,000 Fords in 1936.

Although the '32 V-8s had been considered revolutionary, the '36 models were simply evolutionary. The initial casting and cooling problems had been rectified and now Ford was focusing on refinement. Power output from the sturdy three main-bearing flathead was 85 horsepower and those horses reached the road by way of a three-speed manual transmission and a solid rear axle suspended by leaf springs. Front suspension was also by leaf springs and beam axle, while stopping power came from mechanically operated four-wheel drum brakes.

There's no question that the '36 Fords were good-looking cars. Although the main body shells were largely unchanged from 1935, a revised grille, hood side panels, more flowing fenders and a new trim made them look very different and more modern.

THE CAR OFFERED

For the potential buyer, the choices were staggering. Ford offered a full 18 versions of its 1936 V-8 model. There were coupes and roadsters, phaetons and sedans, cabriolets and wagons, often in several trim levels. For those buyers with $510 and a real sense of style, the two-door Five-Window Coupe was an excellent choice. Thanks to its sleek look, practical sense, it was the sensible choice, and it was a lot of fun too.

This Coupe's known history begins approximately in 1957 when Mr. Robert Richardson acquired the car in his younger years. Selected as a car he really loved, he loved this car for well over half a century and enjoyed this car in the many evolutions it has seen during his long tenure of ownership. After so many years, the car is in its best version today after being the recipient of comprehensive body-off restoration. First order was to get the metalwork completed on the body; some parts were shaved for a smoother look and received the royal treatment before multiple coats of paint were applied. The body also had the cloth top removed, so the metal top was exposed for a cleaner look, as well as a frenched in license plate, 1930s Plymouth taillights were frenched into the body and a pair of front and rear 1932 Ford bumpers were custom fitted flush with the body. Once the body was complete, the car was finished in multiple coats of Immersion Blue Pearl paint, giving the car an amazing look.

Being the oldest car in the collection, this Ford did get some fancy running gear and a fantastic array of parts. Once the body was completed, it was mated to a trick TCI chassis for the ultimate in handling performance. The car received an updated suspension with all new joints and bushings with a full set of adjustable airbag suspension. The old engine was replaced with a Ford Performance 302ci crate engine with multiple power adders and mated to a new updated Ford transmission and a 9-inch Ford rear end. The car received a high performance 4-barrel carburetor, tubular headers, MSD ignition, custom Mattson's aluminum radiator, and a custom dual exhaust system. This setup is estimated to produce over 530 horsepower making this Ford all show and all go.

Rounding out the restoration was a custom interior done in black leather and vinyl. The car received a custom set of Autometer gauges laid out on the custom dashboard. MSD controllers give the driver the engine vitals, and the custom stereo provides musical entertainment. Other notable improvements include a 'Vintage Air' air conditioning system, removed rumble seats, new fuel tank, new wiring harness and baby moon wheels to finish off the period correct look of this excellent build.

Blessed with good power, stunning looks and high-performance motoring, it was hard to beat the '36 Ford V-8 Hardtop. From the looks of this car, it's still going to be hard to beat for a fun and enjoyable driving experience.
