Just a few years after introducing the R90/6 and R90S, BMW upped the capacity of its range-topping flat-twins to 980cc for the 1977 season in the form of the R100/7 series. This – nominally – 1,000cc engine would remain BMW's largest for many years and was used across a range of R100 touring and enduro/adventure models. In 1991 the range was extended with the introduction of the R100R (the 'R' standing for Roadster). Based on the R100GS enduro, the R100R was what would nowadays be termed a 'naked': basically what mainstream motorcycles looked like before the boom in fully-faired 'race replicas'. An outstanding success for the Bavarian firm, its new 'retro' street model featured 18" wire-spoked wheels, old-style valve covers, a single-sided exhaust system, and a coachlined fuel tank, while the front and rear suspension now came from Showa in Japan.
In October 1994 The R100 range ceased production, to be replaced with the R1100 series. To mark the passing of the old guard, BMW offered three commemorative models: the R100RT Classic, R100GS Classic, and R100R Classic, one of the latter being offered here; appropriately, all were finished in funereal black.
This rare 'modern' BMW currently displays a total of 9,573 kilometres on the odometer and is offered with a German Fahrzeugbrief (registration document). The engine turns over.
