In the post-war era, tax laws and license structures encouraged microcars to flourish the world over. Iso presented an innovative design at the 1953 Turin Motor Show, with a front-hinged door gifting ergonomic access to a tiny but spacious automobile. The design was licensed and produced as far afield as Argentina and Brasil, but it was BMW's version that gained worldwide notoriety. In fact, BMW reengineered much of Iso's design, and fitted a modified version of their own 250cc single-cylinder engine from the R25 motorcycle, rated to an astounding 11.8 bhp at 5,800 rpm. The little BMW Isetta 250 would top a dizzying 85 km/h, and over 10,000 were built in the first eight months of production alone. In 1956 BMW took advantage of a restructured license and tax structure to introduce the Isetta 300, with the additional 48cc and a higher compression ratio producing a single extra horsepower but delivering a marked improvement in torque. Today, it is impossible to see a BMW Isetta and not smile, making them a cute and exciting addition to any otherwise serious collection.
Delivered new in Germany and first registered on 4 September 1961, this charming Isetta has never left its original city and has had just three owners. The current owner acquired the car in 1979.
It is offered with its original Kraftfahrzeugbrief (German registration document), original user's manual, and the 1979 purchase invoice.
The car has been professionally maintained in the owner's private workshop. However, while it has benefited from regular care, it has been kept on static display in recent years. As such, it will require recommissioning before being returned to road use.
