Representing a major step forward in the development of Porsche's perennial 911, the Carrera 4 and Carrera 2 ('Type 964' in factory parlance) were launched in 1989, with the Carrera 4 marking the first time four-wheel drive had been seen on a series-production 911. While Porsche had experimented with four-wheel drive on the 959 supercar, many of the lessons learned from that project influenced the design of the new Carreras' chassis and suspension. Face-lifted but retaining the familiar 911 shape, the new models featured extensive mechanical revisions, with 87% of the parts claimed to be entirely new. Both models shared the same 3.6-litre, 250bhp, air-cooled flat-six engine, while power-assisted steering (another 911 'first'), anti-lock brakes, and a five-speed manual transmission were standard on both. The Tiptronic automatic gearbox was an option exclusive to the Carrera 2. The new engine allowed the Type 964 to outperform the previous '3.2' model, while still meeting the latest emissions regulations. Top speed increased to 260 km/h, with 100 km/h attainable in 8.7 seconds.
Delivered new in Germany and first registered there on 24th September 1990, this first generation 964 C2 (built in 1990, model year 1991) was ordered new in striking Midnight Blue, a colour it still retains today. This example comes with a host of desirable options including sunroof, air conditioning, heated driver and passenger seats, an on-board computer and the optional tiptronic gearbox.
Imported in Belgium, where it still resides today, the car has a continuous and well-documented mileage history since 2000, with regular servicing carried out throughout its life we have been advised. It should be noted that the engine currently fitted does not show any stamped engine number. With 196,300 km on the odometer, the car underwent significant work just 2 months ago, including opening the engine particularly addressing oil leaks, a common issue for early 964 models. The invoice for this work is on file.
The car is accompanied by an original Belgian Certificate of Conformity, an Oldtimer Belgian registration document.
