After a lengthy gestation, the W140 generation of S-Class made its debut at the 1991 Geneva International Motor Show, going into direct competition with Japanese brand Lexus and its LS400 for the first time. The range included both short and long wheelbase saloons and the C140 full-size coupé, with a vast line of engines running from frugal petrol and turbodiesel inline sixes to a powerful 5987cc V12. A 1994 update rounded and softened Bruno Sacco's restrained lines bringing the design firmly into the 1990s, with a new nomenclature placing the model designation before the engine size. Many would come to regard the W140 as the last true S-Class built with an engineering mindset. Sluggish sales, owing to a price that was often 25 percent above its competitors, led to a more cost-conscious approach being adopted for the W220 that would replace it in 1998.
This Mercedes-Benz was delivered new on 19th September 1994 by the Mercedes-Benz dealer in Dortmund, featuring the elegant smoke silver metallic exterior with a velour cream interior, which it still retains today. It is equipped with a sunroof as well as a range of desirable options, including a wood/leather steering wheel, a cooling compartment in the center rear backrest, an anti-theft/anti-break-in warning system, and 8-hole light alloy rims.
With a mileage of 126,076 km, the car was originally purchased by a couple who kept it until 2021, when it was sold to the current owner. Since then, the car has been driven only 300 km, being regularly taken out for short drives. It has been meticulously serviced by Mercedes-Benz throughout its life, and the file includes numerous copies of invoices dating back to 1995, along with records of significant maintenance carried out in 2020.
The accompanying documentation includes, in addition to the invoices mentioned, the original fahrzeugbrief, the original purchase invoice from August 1994, which outlines the ownership history, and the current German registration title (zulassungsbescheinigung teil II only). While the car has been well-maintained over the years, it has been kept on static display recently. As such, recommissioning will be necessary before it can return to the road.
