With a history stretching back to the early days of motoring at the turn-of-the-century, Hansa Automobil had merged with the Lloyd firm to become Hansa-Lloyd-Werke A.G. as the first world war broke out. With manufacturing resuming the interwar years, Hansa-Lloyd was taken over by Borgward in 1930 and found success with the advanced 1100 in 1934. With tax rules favouring the small cars the company was making abolished, Borgward produced a larger, 1088cc four-cylinder saloon, available with two or four doors. With an all-steel body and boasting fully independent suspension, the 1100 was advanced for its time and competed with the best offerings from Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Allied bombing during the Second World War destroyed the Bremen factory, with production not resuming under the Hansa-Lloyd brand.
The car has been professionally maintained in the owner's private workshop. However, it has been kept on static display in recent years. As such, it will require attention and recommissioning before being returned to road use.
