Opel launched its new Kapitän in 1938, an all-new luxury saloon debuting an innovative monocoque construction. Available as a four-door saloon and a two-door coupé and convertible, the 2.5-litre inline six proved successful with over 25,000 cars built before the outbreak of war. Production of the four-door saloon resumed in 1948 (as a 1947 model year) with a lightly modified version of the original design. The headlamps were now round instead of hexagonal, and the suspension was improved. At launch the occupying powers still prevented cars with engines larger than 1500cc from being sold in Germany, so in the first year of production the Kapitän was available only to government officials, with civilian deliveries commencing in 1949. A further improved version arrived in 1951, with the nameplate surviving through a further five generations until it was replaced by the Senator in 1978.
This Opel Kapitän has been kept on static display in recent years. As a result, recommissioning and some care will be required before it returns to the road. It is not accompanied by any registration documents.
