Mercedes-Benz introduced the new W126 S-Class at the 1979 Frankfurt Auto Show, with a range including short and long wheelbase saloons and a coupé. Styled by Bruno Sacco, this second-generation S-Class set new standards in quality and safety and was the first production car to feature an airbag as standard. A 1985 mid-cycle refresh added a more powerful 300 bhp V8 to the top of the range – the 560 – which boasted the new 5547cc M117 all-alloy unit. As befitting a Mercedes-Benz flagship, the 560 SEL came standard with a host of desirable features and a lengthy options list, and despite its elevated price, quickly emerged as the most popular W126 model.
This prestigious 560 SEL was delivered new in 1987 in Germany, in the city of its current owner, featuring a blue-black metallic paint finish and an anthracite leather interior. As per the original order, the car was debadged at the rear for a more understated appearance.
Equipped with an impressive array of options, it includes the output increase with 560 sel/sec, seat heater for left and right front seats, hydropneumatic suspension with automatic level lowering device and controlled damping, multi-contour front left seat, airbag in steering wheel, anti-theft/anti-break-in warning system, and a fire extinguisher.
With 412,744 on the odometer, the car has been professionally maintained in the owner's private workshop. However, while it has benefited from regular care, it has been kept on static display in recent years. As such, it will require recommissioning before being returned to road use. It is offered without any registration document.
