Launched in 1972, the W116 generation was the first large Mercedes saloon to be badged S-Class, and quickly set a new high watermark for design, safety, and engineering integrity. At the 1974 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz demonstrated a wild streak by launching the 450 SEL 6.9. Denoted only by ever-so-slightly wider wheels and discreet '6.9' badging at the rear, this high-performance variant housed a developed version of the hand built M100 V8 engine created for the iconic 600 Grosser, now enlarged to 6834cc and fitted with dry-sump lubrication. Front and rear hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension gave a world-beating ride, and the 225 km/h top speed earned the 450 SEL 6.9 the distinction of being the world's fastest saloon at its launch. Just 7,380 examples were produced over a five-year production cycle.
Delivered new in Germany, this elegant and stately 450 SEL 6.9 was first registered on January 3, 1980, with the number plate "RE-EN 450." It was initially owned by an industrialist and business owner from the north of the Ruhr.
The original service book, present in the file, shows regular maintenance stamps from both Mercedes-Benz and Autohaus (authorized service center). It also indicates that the car had covered 108,000 km by 1984, with just an additional 1,000 km added to the odometer since then.
The original Fahrzeugbrief (German registration title) is included in the file, along with the original Daten card and the original sales brochure, which contains technical specifications and photographs.
While it has been carefully maintained over the years, it has been kept on static display. As such, recommissioning will be required before this dignified vehicle is returned to the road.
