Presented at the September 1972 Paris Motor Show, the W116 generation was the first large Mercedes saloon to be badged S-Class, and quickly set a new high watermark for design, safety, and engineering integrity. Awarded European Car of the Year in 1974, the W116 was launched with two versions of the M110 inline-six, and a 3499cc M116 V8 badged as the 350 SE. A 4520cc V8 450 SE was also available from 1973, but this larger capacity motor was aimed at addressing stringent US emissions restrictions rather than increasing performance; the storming 450 SEL 6.9 of 1975 became the powerhouse of the range. With safety always front of mind, electronic four-wheel anti-lock brakes from Bosch were available as an option from 1978, earning the W116 the acclaim of being first production car to feature ABS braking. Over 473,000 examples were built before the W126 arrived in 1979.
This bright Mercedes 350 SE was first registered in March 1973 in Dortmund, Germany, and has had only two owners from new, with the current owner acquiring it in 2009. It has covered just 158,759 km on the odometer. Maintained in the owner's professional garage, it has been kept on static display in recent years. As a result, recommissioning will be required before it returns to the road.
The car is accompanied by its original Fahrzeugbrief (German registration document), original daten card, service invoices from Mercedes-Benz when the second owner acquired the car, the sale invoice between the two owners, and an original sales brochure.
