With the W111 220 having firmly reestablished Mercedes-Benz as the preeminent manufacturer of luxury passenger cars, attention turned to replacing the range-topping but ageing W189 300d Adenaur limousine. With the 600 Grosser still several years away in development, a stopgap was created in 1961 by developing the visually similar but mechanically superior W112 300 SE. The new halo limousine boasted the powerful M189 straight-six, a more refined derivative of the M198 used in the 300SL, with a new air suspension system, automatic transmission, and luxurious standard trimmings. The price was double, but the 300 SE still sold well, and in February 1962 the gloriously elegant coupé and convertible models were released. Paul Bracq revised the famous Heckflosse, creating a more modern car by removing the tailfins that would quickly fall out of favour as the 1960s progressed. Not to be confused with its more basic 220 cousin, the 300 SE is a fabulously advanced and usable classic espousing the best Mercedes-Benz virtues of the time.
Delivered new in Germany in 1963, the car was maintained by the current owner's workshop in the Sixties and has been in his possession for over 25 years.
Offered with its original Daten card and original owner's manual and service booklet, which was regularly stamped until 1968 at 69,218 km, the car's current odometer reading shows 21,912 km on its 5-digit display.
The car has been professionally maintained in the owner's private workshop. However, while it has received regular care, it has been kept on static display in recent years. As such, it will require recommissioning before being returned to road use.
