The nine-year project to develop a sporting car from the DS eventually bore fruit in 1970 with Robert Opron's masterpiece, the SM. What started as a simple evolution culminated in Citroën's purchase of Maserati in 1968, with the aim of combining Maserati's high-performance powertrain expertise with Citroën's advanced suspension and chic French styling. The result can only be described as a spaceship – a futuristic, high-performance, ultra-luxury sporting coupé with relaxed driving dynamics quite unlike anything that had come before it. Hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension, swivelling headlamps, lightweight fibre-reinforced resin wheels, and variable-assist power steering were all innovations. Maserati's 2670cc (later enlarged to 2965cc) 90-degree V6 pushed the slippery 0.33 cD SM to a quoted top speed of 228 km/h, earning the title of world's fastest front-wheel drive car. Today, the SM continues to deliver a driving experience unmatched at any price point, making it an exciting addition for any collection.

First registered on 30 May 1974, this Citroën SM is accompanied by its 1984 Fahrzeugbrief (German registration document), the original owner's manual, and a few invoices and maintenance notes. Among these is a 2013 invoice detailing significant work, including the replacement of the engine, clutch, and exhaust system, as well as various other maintenance works.

The car has been professionally maintained in the owner's private workshop. However, despite receiving regular care, it has been on static display in recent years. Consequently, recommissioning will be required before it can return to road use.
