Mercedes-Benz introduced the new W126 S-Class at the 1979 Frankfurt Auto Show, with a range including short and long wheelbase saloons and a coupé. Styled by Bruno Sacco, this second-generation S-Class set new standards in quality and safety and was the first production car to feature an airbag as standard. A 1985 mid-cycle refresh added a more powerful 300 bhp V8 to the top of the range – the 560 – which boasted the new 5547cc M117 all-alloy unit. The volume sellers remained the six-cylinder cars, with two versions of the M110 and M103 inline sixes in capacities up to 2960cc.
Delivered new on 22 April 1987 by Mercedes-Benz in Dortmund, Germany, this Mercedes-Benz 300 SE is finished in an elegant midnight blue livery with a grey fabric interior. It comes equipped with an extensive list of options, including: outside temperature indicator, automatic 4-gear transmission, rear headrests (left and right), Tempomat (cruise control), airbag, heated outside rear-view mirrors (electrically adjustable on the right), a Mercedes-Benz Exquisit radio without traffic news, a decoder, trailer coupling, anti-theft warning system, catalytic converter, fire extinguisher, rear-mounted loudspeakers, and various technical enhancements.
This 300 SE, showing 217,459 km on the odometer, has a continuous mileage history and has had just two owners from new. The car changed hands in 2009, with a friendly letter between the previous and current owners included in the file.
The accompanying documentation includes the service book (with handwritten notes only), the owner's manual, old German registration documents (Fahrzeugbrief and Fahrzeugschein), a photocopy of the original 1987 purchase order, and various service invoices.
While the car has been well-maintained over the years, it has been kept on static display. As such, recommissioning will be required before it can return to the road.
