The eagerly anticipated replacements for BMW's long-running Earles-fork flat twins finally arrived in 1969 in the form of the '/5' range, the three models on offer being virtually identical apart from their cylinder bore sizes. The R75/5 version produced a claimed 50PS (49.3bhp) which was good enough to propel the 419lbs machine to a top speed of 110mph.
This R75/5 was exported new to North America. The vendor was living in Canada from 1994 to 1998 and bought it in 1995. He used the machine and enjoyed it, and in 1998 brought it back to the UK, where the DVLA issued it with an age-related registration. (The V5 document classes it as Historic, despite its first UK registration being 1998.) According to our vendor, the BMW has always worked well, requiring only routine maintenance. Sadly, he has had to stop riding, hence the decision to sell the BMW, which has just been checked over and is said to be 'on the button'.
