c.1925 AJS 349cc SV
Registration no. EL 1451
Frame no. C83826 (see text)
Engine no. 57520

"The 348cc SV AJS is a delightful machine for fast touring and general road work and bears witness to the vast experience gained by the makers in the TT races."
So said "The Motor Cycle" in its article about care and maintenance of the side valve AJS. It was perfectly true: AJS had won four consecutive Junior TTs in 1914, 1920, 1921 and 1922, and racing has always "improved the breed"! One of the reasons AJS side-valves went so well was because at this time, unlike many of the other manufacturers, their side valve engines were fitted with the same cams as the ohv models.

The vendor bought this charming AJS at a provincial auction in 2016. He has used it on various Sunbeam and Two Stroke Club events. It was most recently started about three months ago. The engine number is stamped on the customary AJS plaque on the crankcase, which is also stamped "Model 1925". The appendix in the back of Stephen Mills' excellent AJS history indicates that frame number 83826 would originally have been used on a 1926 G6 ohv model. According to the 1925-1928 AJS parts book, all 1925 and 1926 349cc models used the same frame. Arrow marks stamped on the crankcase, below the frame number, and on the headstock may indicate previous ownership by the British government or military. A current V5C is supplied.
