The Bob Howard Collection
1954 Moto Guzzi 498cc Super Alce
Registration no. 416 XUL
Frame no. SAC73
Engine no. AV*106068*

Moto Guzzi motorcycles were first used by the Italian Army in the late 1920s, prompting the introduction of a model designed specifically for military use in 1932. This was the GT17, based on the civilian GT16. By 1939 a lightened and improved development, the GT20, had entered service. Renamed 'Alce' (elk) soon after introduction, it would serve as the Italian Army's main military motorcycle during WW2, in excess of 6,000 being delivered up to 1943. Post-war, the Alce was updated with a foot-change gearbox and the more powerful overhead-valve engine of the GTV/GTW in single-port configuration, becoming the Superalce, which remained in service with the Italian Army and police well into the 1950s. The model was never sold commercially.

Bob Howard has owned this imported Superalce since at least April 2006, as evidenced by the Moto Guzzi Club GB dating letter on file, and is its sole UK owner. The accompanying V5C document states that the Guzzi was 'registered and/or used overseas'. The date of 1st UK registration is 2nd April 2008. Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent and thus is sold strictly as viewed (inspection highly recommended). The machine is offered with some useful 'Moto Guzzi' transfers, and a workshop manual, parts list and rider's handbook on CD-ROM. Tool box key present.
