1936 Gilera 498cc LTE Military Motorcycle Combination
Registration no. FA 9908
Frame no. 328118
Engine no. 326410
Gilera's L/LE family of 500cc four-stroke singles was in production from 1935 to 1941, all sharing the same basic cycle parts and long-stroke (84x90mm) sidevalve engine. The latter was a wet-sump design with its oil tank integral with the crankcase, which made for a very tidy appearance, while the four-speed hand-change gearbox was bolted directly to the back of the engine. A girder fork served as the front suspension, while for the first time at the rear there was Gilera's newly patented boxed-spring-and-friction-damper arrangement.
First registered on 31st December 1936 and believed to be an ex-military machine, this magnificent Gilera motorcycle combination was acquired by Bob Howard on 20th August 2015 and appears to be an older restoration. The steering damper is stamped: 'Rauge Secondo 9 Rue Napoleon Bastia' and it should be noted that the sidecar (of unknown manufacture) is only loosely attached. Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent and thus is sold strictly as viewed (inspection highly recommended). Offered with a quantity of photocopied technical literature; tax reminders; and a V5C document.
