THE CHEVROLET CHEVELLE MALIBU
An all-new introduction for the 1964 season, the Chevelle slotted into Chevrolet's line-up between the compact Chevy II and its traditional full-size models such as the Impala. The Chevelle debuted just as the 'muscle car' era was dawning in America and by mid-1964 the top-of-the-range Super Sport (SS) model was available with GM's 327ci (5,360cc) V8 engine in either 250 or 300bhp versions. Several re-styles later, the Chevelle arrived in the '70s decade billed as 'America's most popular mid-size car.' For 1970 the Super Sport could be ordered with the optional big block 454ci (7.4-litre) high-performance V8 under the hood, the latter's maximum power output of 365bhp (LS5) making the Chevelle SS one of the fastest muscle cars ever built.
THE CAR OFFERED
This nicely presented Chevelle Malibu convertible is finished in its original Cranberry Red with striking black stripes over black vinyl interior. According to its trim tag, the car was assembled at the Arlington, Texas plant on the first week of February in 1971. Fully restored, this example sports an SS grille and badging, racing quick release hood clips and forged 18-inch Foose Nitrous SEC wheels in a chrome finish. Under the hood, the Turbo-Jet 454ci LS5 V8 boasts 365bhp of power, which is transferred to the rear wheels through a Turbo-Hydramatic 400 (TH400) 3-speed automatic transmission. Stopping comes courtesy of disc brakes up front, drums to the rear. The odometer reads only 1,943 miles, presumably since the restoration has been completed. This example was nicely optioned with power steering, power brakes, wheel trim moldings, ZL2 ducted hood vent option, as well as air conditioning, which was usually a rare sight to see on a convertible.
Top-down cruising to tire-shredding performance, this beautifully presented Chevelle is sure to deliver. It is not known exactly how many of the SS 454 LS5 Chevelle's convertibles were, but regardless, this is undoubtedly a rare, highly collectible, and thrilling big block muscle car for the devoted enthusiast.
